What is EMC Testing? ![]() Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Testing encompasses the two general fields of emissions (the unwanted generation of electromagnetic energy) and immunity (the continuing operation of electrical equipment in the presence of unplanned electromagnetic disturbances). At Global EMC Inc. we carry out numerous EMC testing programs in our 3 metre Semi-Anechoic Radio Frequency Chamber as well as product safety testing in our in-house lab. Why Conduct EMC Testing? It's a Regulatory Requirement FCC & Industry Canada regulations are mandated by law for any product which could have electromagnetic emissions entering the marketplace. The majority of commercially available spectrum is auctioned off by the FCC & CRTC for use by licensed over the air transmissions, such as television, cellular phones, FM radio & emergency services; for this reason devices not licensed for use in these spectrums are required to be tested before they can be released to market. Wireless devices licensed for use in these spectrums have to be tested as well, but to a much different set of specifications. It Reduces Risks of Non-Compliance Liabilities Every manufacturer has an obligation to its clients and the general public that the use of its product will not violate the standards of public good or interfere with other devices. As such, there are FCC & CRTC sanctioned penalties for violations of these regulatory standards as well as the risk of falling into civil liability for damages caused by non-compliant negligence ; ethically it is commonly seen as "good" (harming the fewest people) to make your product compliant, it is also often more financially viable to bring your product into compliance than face the repercussions. It increases product reliability Similarly, it is also important for your EUT (equipment under test) to remain reliable when subjected to the licensed radio waves present in common operating environments (e.g. Cell-phone signals causing interference on your measuring equipment). Immunity testing not only allows a product to remain reliable in use but is also required for the European CE Marking (Directive 2004/108/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council for EMC testing and Directive 1999/5/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council for RTTE). Why Global EMC for my EMC Testing Requirements? It's What We do Best EMC Testing is our specialization, it's in our corporate name and our engineers are experts in the field.
